A well-structured chart of accounts is one of the foundations of good financial reporting, but it’s something that can easily be overlooked.
What Is a Chart of Accounts?
Your chart of accounts determines how transactions are categorised within your accounting software. If it isn’t set up correctly, you may still be able to see whether your business is making a profit, but understanding where that profit is coming from, where money is being spent and how different areas of the business are performing becomes much more difficult.
For example, rather than grouping a large proportion of costs under broad headings such as “General Expenses” or “Direct Costs”, a more tailored structure could separate marketing, software, professional fees, travel and other key areas of expenditure.
Understanding Your Business Revenue
The same applies to income. If your business has multiple revenue streams, separating these within your chart of accounts can give you much better visibility over which services, products or areas of the business are generating revenue.
As your business grows, this becomes increasingly important. A clear chart of accounts makes management reporting more meaningful, helps identify trends and provides better information when making commercial decisions.
